The challenge
The Air Force Warfare Training School needed to modernise how it delivered key training to its members.
Too many learners were arriving at residential courses without the foundational knowledge they needed, forcing instructors to backfill content and slowing down more advanced instruction. It meant lost time, reduced impact, and frustration for everyone involved.
Spinifex was engaged to create digital training that could reach learners earlier in their journey, fill foundational knowledge gaps, and support flexible, scalable delivery across the RAAF learning environment.

Discovery
We worked alongside Defence stakeholders and subject matter experts to identify the core learning pain points across three critical course areas.
It quickly became clear that what was needed wasn’t just content–it was a shift in the training delivery model. One that gave learners options based on what they already knew, and what they still needed to learn.
Design
We designed and developed modular, adaptive online learning pathways. These pathways allowed learners to:
- Choose a refresher if they had prior experience
- Complete a deep dive if they were new to the content
- Self-assess and track their knowledge along the way
- Access resources anytime, anywhere, via ADELE
All content was mobile-ready, WCAG-aligned, and designed to be easily updated by internal teams post-launch.

Delivery
The program was delivered within a five-month window, including consultation, design, testing, stakeholder review, and LMS integration.
Spinifex also supported the training team with tools and training to ensure the modules could evolve with future operational needs.
Results
The new online pathways:
- Improved learner readiness before face-to-face instruction
- Reduced classroom time spent revisiting foundational material
- Increased efficiency for instructors and facilitators
- Provided scalable, repeatable, and auditable training tools
- Strengthened capability through earlier, smarter engagement
All delivered inside the Defence ADELE environment on time, on spec, and ready to support long-term Defence learning strategy.
Modern training isn’t about replacing instructors,
it’s about giving them better-prepared learners.
If your training program is spending too much time going backwards, maybe it’s time to step forward.
