Lately, we’ve been having some great conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) – what it really looks like in practice, how we show up for each other, and how we keep evolving. And we figured, why not share a little of how we approach it at Spinifex?
We’ve dubbed March our DEI Month – and it’s no coincidence. It’s a month that’s buzzing with moments to reflect and celebrate: Sydney’s LGBTQIA+ Mardi Gras, International Women’s Day (IWD), Harmony Month, and Employee Appreciation Day. But here’s the thing – inclusivity doesn’t fit neatly into a calendar square. For us, it’s a daily practice. A mindset. A way of doing business that fuels our creativity, strengthens our connections, and keeps us grounded in purpose.
This March, we’ve leaned into what makes us different – and celebrated it. From championing flexible work arrangements for working mums on IWD, to proudly sharing our cultural stories on Harmony Day, to celebrating Mardi Gras and tailoring work setups that actually work for real lives – we’ve been putting values into action.
Because inclusivity isn’t about ticking boxes – it’s about making the effort, asking the questions, and understanding the intent behind someone’s story, challenge, or success. And hey, we’re pretty good at that.
The power of walking the walk
Inclusivity isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s an ever-evolving commitment to create a space where no one feels they don’t matter. Our team is a tapestry of cultures and nationalities, and we’re all the richer for it.
When one of our team members needed language lessons to make the leap from the Philippines to Sydney, we said, “Let’s do it.” That’s not a handout; that’s an investment – an act of teamwork, adaptability, and courage rolled into one.
Our involvement in ACON’s Welcome Here program is another way we hold ourselves accountable. It’s not just a sticker on the door. It’s our real-world commitment to creating spaces where LGBTIQ+ people feel genuinely welcome, seen and celebrated. It’s how we hold ourselves accountable, and it reflects the kind of business we are: people-first, values-led, and proudly inclusive.
Whether you’re part of our team or part of our network, you should feel welcome, celebrated, and supported.
Our team spans a mix of ages, genders, and life experiences, which allows us to approach challenges and opportunities from multiple angles. With a strong balance of female and male perspectives, we ensure that every voice is valued and contributes to the bigger picture.
Inclusivity isn’t just about who you are—it’s also about how you work. We’ve embraced flexibility in all its forms, particularly for working mums. From offering part-time arrangements and work-from-home options, we help our team balance their professional and personal lives. This ensures they have the resources and adaptability to thrive both at home and in their careers. We even recruited a team member from the Gold Coast. Rather than viewing distance as a limitation, we turned it into an opportunity to innovate. By flying them to Sydney once a month for a week of face-to-face collaboration with the team, we ensured they felt included, valued, and empowered while also respecting the flexibility their situation required. It’s proof that inclusivity isn’t just about proximity – it’s about building connections that work for everyone.
Inclusivity and communication: The Spinifex way
At its core, inclusivity is all about communication. How do you create a space where every voice matters, where every story feels heard, and where ideas flourish? We don’t just deliver results; we make sure the process reflects our values. It starts with asking the right questions, sharing knowledge, and daring to create something impactful.
Inclusivity isn’t about assuming – it’s about listening, learning, and understanding the intent behind someone’s words, actions, or experiences.
We are accountability in action: changing the world one conversation, campaign, or connection at a time. We are teamwork personified: because inclusivity works best when we join forces. We are adaptability: redefining what “welcome” means as cultures, ideas, and priorities evolve. We are courage: the kind that says “no” to good enough and “yes” to exceptional. And we are knowledge: the power behind every inclusive decision, guiding us to a future where everyone has a place at the table.
Inclusivity in communication also means challenging mediocrity and pushing for impact. We’re not afraid to call BS … when an idea doesn’t align with our values or our vision. Because inclusivity isn’t just about being polite – it’s about being courageous, truthful, and committed to creating meaningful change.
Our March impact
March may be our DEI Month, but for us, this is just part of an ongoing journey. Inclusivity isn’t a moment; it’s a movement.
Inclusivity is never done. It’s a muscle we flex daily. A lens we apply to every project, every brief, every brainstorm. It fuels our creativity. It sharpens our strategy. And it makes us better – as a team, as storytellers, and as humans.
Here’s to making every month as inclusive as March.
